The work premiered on June 15th, 1810. Egmont tells the story of the heroic Count Egmont, who was condemned to death for having taken a valiant stand against oppression. The powerful and expressive overture became an unofficial anthem of the 1956 Hungarian revolution and remains very popular to this day.
