There are many anecdotes about the String Quartet op. 131: Beethoven described it as his best work; This string quartet was most important to him - looking back on the works of his last creative period. The composer dealt with a lot in it: health problems, social isolation due to his increasing deafness, and the suicide attempt of his nephew Karl. It is also said that Franz Schubert wished to hear this work again on his deathbed.
