Although the first string sextet by Brahms enjoyed great popularity since its appearance in 1861, publisher Simrock hesitated when in 1865 the composer offered him a second "in the same cheerful character". So Brahms turned in the meantime even to the competition, before Simrock then promised the publication. Critically skeptical of the criticism at first, the Opus 36, published in 1866, found even greater approval in Brahms's Circle of Friends: Clara Schumann praised the successful motivic work, while others enthused about the magical sound effects. Based on the Brahms Complete Edition by Katrin Eich.
