Oh, I cannot help it, I would like to sing myself to death like a nightingale.' 138 of his roughly 250 songs were written in the 'lieder year' 1840. This was the year when the long years of quarrelling about his marriage to Clara Wieck finally came to a happy end by court order. It is based on the recently published Vol. VI/6 (RSA 1043-10) of the Robert Schumann Complete Edition.
