Ordered by the Britten Sinfonia and the Town Hall in Birmingham, the piece was composed in 2009-10. It premiered with Nicholas Daniel as a soloist and the Britten Symphony in October 2010. Since then both have performed the piece many more times and presented a CD recording at the Harmonia Munid label.
With his three contrasting movements, MacMillan's Oboe Concerto represents a significant addition to the repertoire of concertos for oboe.
