Herbert Howells is a giant of 20th century Anglican church music, the remainder of whose oeuvre is in the process of gaining new appreciation. This short 88 pages in total book includes an interview with the composer, sensitive and expert probing of the influences on his work with many examples included for illustration and a list of Howells principal works. The book is widely considered a trail-blazing study, a work of essential reading for those intrigued by the work of this composer. As well as being a writer on music and a biographer of musicians, the author Christopher Palmer was himself a most accomplished composer and arranger. He was extremely highly regarded as a symphonic Orchestrator, both of film scores and of symphonic suites based on the legacies of other composers. The book has an introduction by renowned Choral conductor Sir David Willcocks.
