Water! Water! is an unusual piece that Partch wrote on behalf of the Illini Union Student Board of the University of Illinois. On the occasion of the three performances in 1962 and in comparison to his two other stage works from that time, The Bewitched and Revelation in the Courthouse Park, Partch said: "This is a burlesque ... but not a finished work. The two or many more years that are really needed to consider and develop such an idea were unavailable and there was no time to work through the techniques of these burlesques in long rehearsals ... between the beginning of the composition and the performance passed only ten months."
