This charming polyphonic lied is from the Musae Sioniae collection of German Renaissance composer Michael Praetorius, though it is not certain that he is the original author of “Psallite.” It is set in a macaronic text of Latin and German (pronunciation guide included). John Leavitt has skillfully taken a piece of musical history and made it accessible to today's youth. The energy and contrasts in this piece make it a sure winner for concert or contest.
