Coming from early in the composer's career, the grand opera "Rienzi" shows many traits that would become hallmarks of his style. The overture has been a staple of band repertoire from the early days of concert bands. The band transcription of the overture effectively creates the heroic nature and nobility of Rienzi and his tragic, inevitable fall in the sweeping gestures in the woodwinds, the eloquent melody in the opening section, the boisterous brass fanfares, and the rousing march tunes.
