Mary Lynn Lightfoot eloquently expresses African American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar's imaginative text in this concert and festival winner for young and developing choirs. Creative contrasts abound as an ethereal opening in major mode leads into a spirited jazz waltz that alternates between the major and minor. The piece closes with that same waltz fading into the "starry night."
