This is a rare opportunity to own one of the earliest Australian-made electric archtops – a Maton EG-240 Supreme, which we believe dates to the very late 1940s or early 1950s. Produced in Melbourne not long after Bill May founded Maton in 1946, the EG-240 was among the first electric guitars ever built in Australia.

Tone & Playability

These early EG-240s are famous for their warm, woody acoustic resonance combined with the unique, vintage bite of the floating bar-magnet pickup. Lightweight and responsive, this is a guitar that bridges Maton’s early archtop tradition with the dawn of electrics in Australia.

Historical Significance

  • Built around Maton’s earliest years (company founded 1946).

  • The two-knob floating pickup layout places this guitar very close to the late ’40s / early ’50s transition period.

  • Very few examples from this era survive — most documented EG-240s are from the mid to late 1950s.

Condition

  • Structurally sound, plays well for its age.

  • Pickup and electronics are functioning.

  • Cosmetic wear consistent with 70+ years of age.

  • Tailpiece replaced.
